Why is this the David Fullerton “Arizona” Golf Tournament?
David loved Arizona. It was his “happy place”. In 2011 we purchased a house in North Scottsdale with the intention of spending winters there when we retired. At first, we only spent a few weeks a year there, but in 2017, when David retired “half time” we began to spend more time in the beautiful desert.
David loved the desert. He loved the wide-open skies. He loved the rolling hills. He loved the smell of the desert after the rain. He loved the birds and the animals that are unique to the area. He especially loved the majestic saguaro cacti that grew all around us. He could never get enough of the desert.
He also loved the desert lifestyle. As a man who loved the outdoors, Arizona offered him the opportunity to hike, play racquet sports and golf in the winter months when his native Canada was covered in several inches of snow.
Golf was a big part of our life in Arizona and David often said that the most beautiful courses he played were there, among the cacti he loved so much.
Unfortunately, I can’t bring you all to Arizona to play golf . . . but I can try to bring a sense of the Arizona David loved to each of you who participate in this event.
I hope you will join us.
David’s Story
David Fullerton was a member of Toronto’s commercial real estate community for 35 years. He was a man of principles, with a generosity of spirit that is not always found in the realm of business. He thrived in the world of deal-making, believing that there was always an agreement to be made and a deal to be done. He competed fiercely in business and sports, aiming for excellence while maintaining integrity. He recognized others’ achievements and always acknowledged the success of his colleagues and his opponents.
David was a mentor to many young agents starting in the field. He took immense pride in the success of his mentees, and as he progressed in his career, David always hoped that his legacy would be the success and happiness of the people he trained. He was a successful agent, colleague and friend – and to me, he was my soulmate.
On May 11, 2025, after a 4 month long struggle with severe anxiety and depression, David died by suicide. Even though he had been struggling, no one saw it coming. Therapists, Doctors, Psychiatrists, everyone thought David would be okay. David cherished life and viewed each day as an adventure, but the pain of his mental illness was unbearable for him.
In Canada, suicide claims approximately 12 lives every day (4500 people annually) and is a leading cause of death, especially for those aged 15-34. Men are three times more likely to die by suicide, and each loss deeply impacts those close to them who then face higher suicide risk themselves. Additionally, more than 200 individuals attempt suicide each day in Canada. This equates to over 73,000 people annually who need support and intervention.
I am seeking your support as I honour the memory of my late husband, David. On Wednesday, August 26, 2026 I will be hosting the inaugural David Fullerton Arizona Golf Tournament to help raise funds for the Distress Centres of Greater Toronto.
Distress Centres of Greater Toronto (DCGT) offers free, 24/7 support in nine languages by phone and in English by text, helping anyone in need, including those at risk of suicide and their loved ones. The DCGT staff, volunteers and supporters work to reduce mental health stigma, educate the public, and expand access to these vital services.
How can you help? As a sponsor, or golf participant, in this event, you stand with me, David’s friends and the Distress Centre of Greater Toronto, in raising awareness of suicide and supporting those at risk in our community. Sponsorship at any level helps to ensure that the DCGT can continue to offer hope to those in crisis and to those family members who have been left behind. Please see the details below regarding sponsorship opportunity, donations and registration.
Please help me in honouring David and continuing his legacy of helping others. Together we can create a future where fewer lives are lost to suicide and where fewer people are affected by such devasting loss. I hope you will join me.
